Hello everyone and especially welcome to those parents who are new to the school. This edition of our newsletter dates from September last year to date and includes lots of pictures and information about the activities our children have been partaking in. As you will see from inside we have had a very busy few months in the school. We would like to say a big thank you to all the parents who helped out at events and with the ongoing supervision of after school activities. Without your assistance we could not offer such a varied programme of activities.
As you are aware all funds raised by events such as our Jewellery Night, Parents Social Night, Pancake Day and of course our sponsored swim are going to St John’s Ward in Crumlin. The total is getting very large and we look forward to hearing the final amount raised and having the children of the school present a cheque to Crumlin Childrens’ Hospital…watch this space!!!
Garden Club has grown so popular this year that it now runs for those students from 3rd class and upwards every third week. The children had lots of crops in Autumn this year. Re-planting will be in full swing in the coming weeks. We bade farewell to Loyola earlier in the season and we are very grateful for all her help and support over the years. The excitement is palpable in the air with lots of buds showing, frog spawn in the offing and a chick or two hopefully due to hatch on St Patrick’s Day. We also look forward to the arrival of a new variety of animal to the garden…..
We had a great long term up to Christmas this year which saw some new faces coming to the pool. Progress was made very quickly by those children at the smaller end in particular with not an arm band in sight now! The term ended with our usual fun day of swimming followed by treats for all. Our last day of lessons was followed quickly by the news that Glenalbyn Pool had to close for the foreseeable future. However, thanks to some fast action by parents and our swimming co-ordinator St Brigid’s managed to secure a 3pm slot every Thursday in Newpark swimming pool. Lessons in Newpark are going very well to date and the children are enjoying the new environment. The highlight of the Spring term so far has been our sponsored swim which was a huge success. We await final confirmation on our swimming venue and times for the Summer term as we go to press!
On Thursday 13th February all our swimmers took place in a sponsored swim organised by Helena Poynton (Mum of Hannah in Senior Infants) and Avril Montgomery, swimming coordinator. To date €3,166.30 has been collected – an incredible achievement from a small group of children! The total distance swam by the children & Helena was an amazing 28km 771 metres!!!
APRIL 10th 2014 – SAVE THE DATE:
The eighth annual school show will take place in the Parish Hall at 7pm on Thursday 10th April. For those of you who are new to the school, this event involves every child in every class in the school having a turn with their class on stage. All rehearsals take place in school time. The plays have been selected and rehearsals are well under way by the children under the guidance of Miss Whelan and Miss Shanley (Music teacher).
Our newest after school activity is Ball Skills being run on a Monday afternoon by Ian Dumbleton. The feedback from all children participating is very positive and we look forward to seeing the skills play out in other sports in the school and indeed on our sports day in June.
Playball had a very successful term to Christmas with 37 children taking part in three groups after school on Thursdays and Fridays. The Junior Infants in particular love this activity and it is a wonderful introduction for them to a wide variety of team sports. A massive thank you to our coaches and to all the parents and minders who have supervised throughout the term.
The New Year schedule continued on as before with Junior Infants having Playball on Thursdays, Senior Infants and First Class having Playball on Fridays.
6th Class Challenge
There have been a number of talks and outings to date for the current 6th class including a visit to Dun Laoghaire fire station. The highlight of the year so far was a visit to RTE last Friday 28th February. The children got to visit the set of the Late Late Show and met with Ryan Tubridy. They watched Johnny Logan rehearsing for the show that evening also. A tour of the radio studios was also part of the visit and they met with Bryan Dobson. The children were also given a tour of the Fair City set and they also watched “News2day” (the programme they had been on earlier in the year) go out live. Some food in the canteen rounded off a truly momentous visit.
The annual PA social night for parents was a great success with nearly 60 attending. The food, wine and conversation flowed freely and Andrew Montgomery entertained all with his Back to School quiz – though the number of steps from the front gate to the school fooled many! In all about €360 was raised for our on going fundraising campaign for St John’s Ward, Crumlin. A big thanks to all who helped, gave food and attended.
Speech & Drama
The Drama Academy will be putting on a showcase of all their classes in the Pavillion Theatre in Dun Laoghaire on Sunday 6th April, and St Brigids Senior Drama Group will also take part in this. Rehearsals are well under way for the show in which the Senior class will be participating and the children are really enjoying themselves. As regards the Junior Class, Sally and Deirdre have selected a little play for them to perform for parents in the hall in Spring/Summer and we will be advised a date for this shortly. Here are some photos of the last drama class held before Christmas. The Juniors were acting out a scene from The Grinch and the Seniors were improvising in groups.
There are 50 children doing hockey this term. We would like to welcome our new coach Stella Davis. Stella plays with Pembroke Wanderers and also coaches in Wesley College; Stella has been taking the junior class. Avril Montgomery has also joined us as part of the coaching staff and assists Marina with the middle group. Nicky Cornick continues to coach the senior group. The girls team are in division 5 of the girls league and have played 2 matches, one loss and one win to date. They have also played a number of friendlies.
The boys have also played a number of friendlies against, St Killians, Gaurdian Angels, Monkstown Educate together & John Scottus, winning them all.
